Guide

When do you need to change a video's format?

Some devices and apps accept only certain formats. MP4 (H.264 + AAC) is the most widely accepted, WebM suits the web, MKV is versatile for archives, and MOV is common in Apple's ecosystem.

If only the container needs changing and the resolution stays Original, turn on "Copy without re-encoding" in the advanced settings: it is very fast and the quality does not change.

How it works

Three simple steps

1

Add your video

Drag or choose a file. MKV, AVI, FLV, 3GP and other formats are supported too.

2

Choose format and resolution

Tap MP4, WebM, MKV or MOV, then resolution and quality. Resolution choices never enlarge the original.

3

Convert and download

Follow the progress and time estimate, then download the result.

Features

What you can set

Resolution from 1080p to 240p

Lower the resolution for a smaller file. Options above the original resolution are disabled automatically.

Four quality levels

From High to Tiny. An estimated output size appears before you start.

Frame rate and mute

Drop to 30, 24 or 15 fps, or remove the sound if you do not need it.

Fast or balanced

Fast encodes sooner but makes a larger file; Balanced makes a smaller one.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why is converting video slower than extracting MP3?

Extracting audio (MP3) is light work and usually finishes in seconds. Converting video means re-encoding every frame, and that is done by your device's processor, not by a server. As a rough guide, 480p to 720p video takes about one to two times its duration. Choosing a smaller resolution, the "Fast" speed, or trimming to the part you need makes it faster.

Will the sound or picture quality drop?

Converting to a lossy format (MP3, MP4) means compressing again. At the Good or High settings the difference is usually hard to notice. Raising the bitrate or resolution above the original does not improve the result, and Ubahin never upscales resolution. For full-quality audio, choose FLAC or WAV.

What is the maximum file size?

We set no limit, but browsers have memory limits. As a guideline, up to about 500 MB is comfortable on a laptop and up to about 200 MB on a phone. Larger files can make the browser run out of memory; trim first or use a more powerful device.

What is the difference between MP4, WebM, MKV and MOV?

They are "containers" that hold picture and sound. MP4 is the most compatible. WebM is designed for the web. MKV is flexible for archives. MOV is widely used on Apple devices. In Ubahin, MP4, MKV and MOV hold H.264 video and AAC sound; WebM holds VP8 and Vorbis.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Conversion runs in your browser using a WebAssembly build of ffmpeg, so your files are never sent to Ubahin's servers. The only thing your browser downloads is the conversion engine (about 7 MB, once, then cached). If you use the Link field, the file is fetched directly from its source into your browser.

Which formats are supported?

Input: most common video and audio formats (MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI, FLV, 3GP, MP3, M4A, WAV, FLAC, OGG, OPUS and more). Output: MP3, M4A, WAV, FLAC, OGG and OPUS for audio; MP4, WebM, MKV and MOV for video; and GIF.
